He’s the cat’s meow! In time for Father’s Day (June 16), PETA is honoring comedian and WTF with Marc Maron podcast host Marc Maron with a “WTF (Wonderful to Felines)” Award for being a purrfectly wonderful dad to his three adopted cats: Sammy, Buster, and Charlie Beans. Maron, whose signature irreverent humor can be heard in a PETA spot promoting spaying and neutering, frequently shares videos of his feline companions with his Instagram followers—including clips of his cats in their custom-built catio (a patio for cats), where they can experience the pleasures of the outdoors without endangering themselves, birds, or other wildlife.

Wonderful to Felines Certificate Award

“PETA’s cruelty case files are filled with incidents involving cats who were allowed to roam outside unsupervised, which shows how essential it is to keep cats indoors,” says PETA Senior Vice President Lisa Lange. “PETA encourages everyone to follow Marc Maron’s lead and give cats a happy life safe from speeding cars, predators, and the other dangers of the outdoors.”

In addition to maiming and killing an estimated 1.3 billion to 4 billion birds every year in the U.S., cats who are allowed to roam outdoors are at risk of ingesting poison, contracting fatal diseases, facing abuse by cruel people, being hit by cars, or falling victim to many other potential dangers. That’s why PETA urges everyone to always keep cats indoors and stimulated with toys, climbing structures and scratching posts, cat TV, and other enrichment. The group offers a catio-building guide as well as a “cat guardian’s bible”—a perfect gift for cat dads at any time of year—written by PETA President Ingrid Newkirk and available for purchase here.

PETA—whose motto reads, in part, that “animals are not ours to abuse in any way”—points out that Every Animal Is Someone and offers free Empathy Kits for people who need a lesson in kindness. For more information, please visit PETA.org or follow the group on X, Facebook, or Instagram.
