Please see PETA Vice President Shalin Gala’s statement regarding what the University of California workers’ strike means for animals in laboratories on the system’s campuses:

PETA demands to know who is caring for the tens of thousands of animals locked inside laboratories on University of California campuses during the current strike. The COVID-19 mass killing sprees of animals deemed nonessential or noncritical to experiments in campus laboratories should have prompted the university system to question why any animals are being bought, bred, trapped, or experimented on in the first place if they’re considered so disposable because of delayed or terminated experiments. The pandemic and the labor strike should be loud wake-up calls to shift away from cruel and wasteful experiments on animals and toward a “new normal” of more effective, economical, and ethical animal-free research, as detailed in PETA’s Research Modernization Deal.
