A Compassionate Business Award is on its way from PETA to WeWork in honor of its new policy banning beef, pork, and poultry from company events—a policy that the business points out will save over 15 million animals by 2023 and that it says was inspired by new research that points to the significant environmental impact of avoiding meat. Additionally, the company will prohibit employees from putting meaty meals on expense accounts and will no longer offer meat items at the self-serve food and drink kiosks in its 400 co-working spaces.

“WeWork’s compassionate move to take meat off the menu is a positive first step toward saving animals’ lives, protecting the environment, and creating a healthier workplace culture,” says PETA Executive Vice President Tracy Reiman. “PETA is encouraging everyone to work it like WeWork and go vegan.”

Vegan meals reduce diners’ chances of developing heart disease by a whopping 32 percent, according to a large-scale study conducted by Oxford University. In addition, going vegan reduces the risk of suffering from diabetes, obesity, and cancer—and saves the lives of nearly 200 animals every year. One United Nations report found that animal agriculture is responsible for more greenhouse-gas emissions than all the cars, planes, trucks, and ships in the world combined—and another found that a global switch to a vegan diet is vital if we are to combat the worst effects of climate change.

PETA, whose motto reads, in part, that “animals are not ours to eat,” notes that public interest in vegan eating is higher now than ever before.
