As demand for delicious vegan meals soars at hot spots across the country, PETA’s “official” tasters set out to find the Top 10 Vegan Pizzas in time for National Pizza Pie Day on February 9, and the Vegan Tex Mex at Kansas City’s Waldo Pizza has beaten out a throng of competitors to take home eighth place honors, including a letter of congratulations and a framed certificate.
Loaded with a scrumptious mix of taco sauce, a choice of vegan mozzarella or Daiya vegan Italian cheese, meat-free taco crumbles or vegan hamburger, Daiya vegan cheddar, and an array of fresh veggies, the Vegan Tex Mex is a one-of-a-kind favorite delighting locals and visitors alike.
“The Vegan Tex Mex is a crowd pleaser with a delicious cruelty-free spread of ingredients, and that earns it a well-deserved spot on our list,” says PETA Executive Vice President Tracy Reiman. “With so many tasty vegan options widely available, PETA is calling on caring people everywhere to kick dairy products to the curb in favor of a scrumptious slice of vegan pizza.”
As documented by PETA, whose motto reads, in part, that “animals are not ours to abuse in any way,” cows exploited for their milk are genetically manipulated to produce four and a half times the amount of milk that they naturally would and are often mutilated without receiving any painkillers whatsoever.
Taking top honors in PETA’s roundup is the delicious Red Beans and Rice Pizza, created in true Louisiana fashion by New Orleans’ Mid City Pizza, while The Works at 3 Brothers Pizza Cafe on Long Island, N.Y., grabs second place. Nabbing third place is the Sweet Potato of Mine, a veggie-packed pie from Silly’s Restaurant in Portland, Maine, while fourth place goes to the decadently noodle- and vegan cheese–topped The Vegan Mac from Dimo’s in Chicago. The Loaded Potato Pizza—brimming with tempeh “bacon” bits—from Brick Road Pizza Co. in Grand Rapids, Mich., claims spot number five, and pies from pizzerias in Los Angeles; Portland, Ore.; Providence, R.I.; and Flagstaff, Ariz., fill out the top 10.
