University of Alabama–Birmingham Cited by Feds After Carving Into Monkeys’ Skulls: PETA Statement

Please see the following statement from PETA Vice President Dr. Alka Chandna regarding the violations of animal welfare regulations posted by the U.S. Department of Agriculture against the University of Alabama–Birmingham:

Callousness runs deep in the University of Alabama–Birmingham’s laboratories, where experimenters carved into monkeys’ skulls without first seeking out non-animal methods, as required by law. The monkeys were kept thirsty to force them to cooperate with experimenters in exchange for a sip of water. The university doesn’t deserve another penny of taxpayer money for animal experiments.

Inspectors also cited the school’s labs for various other problems, including unqualified staff, poor veterinary care, and a member of the animal experimentation oversight committee who hasn’t shown up to a full third of the committee’s meetings in the past year.

The university must redirect its resources toward modern, non-animal research methods that will actually help humans, and we urge officials there to adopt PETA’s Research Modernization Deal.
