It’s National Seafood Month (October), with a vegan twist! PETA has covered buses and bus shelters in the Gateway City with images of dozens of sea animals demanding to be left off diners’ plates—and on Saturday, next to one of the new ads, the group will give passersby the opportunaty to try free crispy seasoned tofu Ish Bites (with vegan tartar sauce) from CC’s Vegan Spot.

When:    Saturday, October 2, 1 p.m.

Where:    1730 Market St. (near the intersection with S. 18th Street), St. Louis

PETA’s bus ads urge viewers to watch Seaspiracy, which exposes the widespread environmental destruction caused by the global fishing industry, including that fishing gear—and not plastic bottles—makes up an estimated 46% of the Great Pacific Garbage Patch.

“Behind every crab cake or fish fillet is an individual who felt pain and fear, just as you and I do,” says PETA Executive Vice President Tracy Reiman. “PETA encourages everyone to make the switch to delicious vegan seafood, which helps protect aquatic animals and the oceans they call home.”

Vegan seafood—such as Gardein’s Golden Fishless Filets and Good Catch’s Crab-Free Cakes—is kinder to the Earth’s seas, is free of saturated animal fat and cholesterol, and prevents fish from being gutted on the decks of fishing boats, live lobsters from being dropped into boiling water, crabs from being dismembered while still conscious, and octopuses from being cut up and served while still squirming.

PETA’s ads can be found on buses and on bus shelters at the following other locations:

  • 1621 S. Broadway
  • 4670 Chippewa St.
  • 715 Chouteau Ave.
  • 1006 Clark Ave.
  • 4315 Hampton Ave.
  • 1006 S. Jefferson Ave.
  • 3101 Market St.
  • 210 N. Tucker Blvd.
  • 300 S. Tucker Blvd.

PETA—whose motto reads, in part, that “animals are not ours to eat”—opposes speciesism, a human-supremacist worldview. For more information, please visit PETA.org or follow the group on Twitter, Facebook, or Instagram.
