With devastating wildfires burning across the western part of the state, PETA is sending a matchbox with a message to Gov. Doug Burgum that ditching meat is a must to combat extreme weather caused by the climate catastrophe.

The action comes after Burgum refused to make any concrete plans for reducing the state’s carbon footprint and declared a “Beef Month” statewide—even though the United Nations notes that about a third of all human-caused greenhouse gas emissions are linked to food production and the largest percentage of these emissions come from the meat and dairy industries.

“Humans’ desire for a fleeting taste of flesh sends billions of animals to face the slaughterhouse knife and imperils the health of the fragile planet,” says PETA President Ingrid Newkirk. “PETA is urging the governor to stop pandering to the destructive meat, egg, and dairy industries and is asking the public to please go vegan, for everyone’s sake.”

Clearing land in order to raise animals and grow crops to feed them is a leading cause of deforestation, and the massive amount of water used in animal agriculture contributes to the dry conditions that allow wildfires to spread. A study published in the journal Earth System Science Data found that greenhouse gas emissions are at an all-time high, threatening to push the world into “unprecedented” levels of global heating. In addition to slashing their carbon footprint, every person who goes vegan spares nearly 200 animals each year daily suffering and a terrifying death.

PETA—whose motto reads, in part, that “animals are not ours to eat”—points out that Every Animal Is Someone and offers free Empathy Kits for people who need a lesson in kindness. The group’s free vegan starter kits are available here. For more information, please visit PETA.org or follow the group on X, Facebook, or Instagram.
