Snip, Snip, Hooray! PETA to Provide Free Spay/Neuter Surgeries to 200 Animals in Galax

For area residents feeling the pinch of inflation and a veterinary workforce shortage, the fix is in: free spay/neuter surgeries for 200 animals provided by PETA and the Twin County Humane Society. Following the success of last year’s event, during which 150 companion animals were sterilized, appointments are fully booked on PETA’s two mobile clinics coming in from Hampton Roads this year, but staff will work tirelessly to vaccinate and microchip the animals, too—all free of charge.

When: Thursday, May 16, and Friday, May 17, 10 a.m.

Where: Twin County Humane Society, 21 Matthews St., Galax

On May 16 from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m., light refreshments will be served and legislators from the surrounding districts have been invited to attend, but your attendance is welcome at any time during the two-day event.

“Shelters in Virginia and across the country are bursting at the seams with homeless animals, while many more cats and dogs struggle to survive on the mean streets,” says PETA Senior Vice President Daphna Nachminovitch. “The solution is prevention, and PETA’s mobile clinics will help Virginians do their part by spaying or neutering their animal companions.”

PETA’s mobile clinics have sterilized over 227,000 animals since the program’s inception in 2001, preventing the births of hundreds of thousands of unwanted kittens and puppies. Sterilization also reduces or eliminates animals’ risk of suffering from several reproductive health issues and can lead to longer and happier lives.
