What: PETA supporters will shock shoppers and members of the community on Friday by waving sledgehammers in the air outside Beijing Tong Ren Tang in Toronto to protest the business’s decision to continue selling ejiao, a traditional Chinese “medicine” made from donkeys’ hides, despite having been informed by PETA in March that baby donkeys are bludgeoned and killed for the cruelly obtained product. The protest against the sale of ejiao is the fifth of many to take place across North America, including in Los Angeles; San Francisco; Vancouver, British Columbia; and more.
When: Friday, June 29, 2–3 p.m.
Where: Beijing Tong Ren Tang, 4577 Steeles Ave. E., Scarborough
Beijing Tong Ren Tang, 719 Central Pkwy. W., Mississauga
A PETA video exposé of the Chinese ejiao industry revealed that thousands of donkeys are kept in filthy, cramped concrete-floored pens and beaten when they reach the market. Their heads are then struck with sledgehammers, and their throats are slit before workers cut off their skin. The footage shows that some animals continued to breathe and move even after this horrific treatment.
“No one needs donkey skin except the animals who were born in it,” says PETA supporter Carson Au. “PETA stands with protesters in calling for a ban on this vile product made from the hides of bludgeoned baby donkeys.”
A number of U.S.-based companies—including eBay and Walmart (and its Jet.com)—stopped selling ejiao after hearing from PETA, whose motto reads, in part, that “animals are not ours to eat or abuse in any other way.”
