Just in time for the holiday shopping season, RZA’s lifestyle company, 36 Chambers, and Embassy of Bricks and Logs, a contemporary vegan outerwear brand based in Germany, have teamed up with PETA for the launch of the Flying Guillotine Puffer Jacket, a new limited-edition down-free jacket made with recycled plastic bottles collected from the ocean. Photos are available here, and a promotional video is available here.
The puffer jacket features a colorful interior motif designed by an in-house vegan artist at 36 Chambers, and the hood is emblazoned with the words “Our Heads No Longer Belong to Us,” a line from the Taiwanese film Master of the Flying Guillotine. In honor of the collaboration, a percentage of the jackets’ sales will go toward PETA’s vital work to help animals used in the clothing industry.
“As we evolve as a people through technology and ingenuity, we have the ability through humane ways to fashion garments that not only serve our purpose but also, more importantly, abandon the unnecessary cruelty to animals,” says RZA.
“While down items harm animals and the planet, this warm, trendy vegan coat made with 100% recycled ocean plastic will help PETA save animals,” adds PETA Executive Vice President Tracy Reiman. “The Flying Guillotine Puffer Jacket is the perfect choice for anyone who wants to wear their heart on their sleeve this winter.”
In the down industry, workers commonly clamp live birds upside down between their knees and rip out handfuls of feathers as the animals struggle and shriek in pain. Birds are often plucked so violently that their skin rips open, leaving them with gaping wounds that workers then sew shut—without giving them any pain relief. Fortunately, today’s high-tech synthetic materials are durable and allergen-free, and unlike down, they still insulate when wet.
The jacket is available for purchase here. It’s priced at $336, and 15% of the proceeds will be donated to PETA.
PETA—whose motto reads, in part, that “animals are not ours to wear”—opposes speciesism, which is a human-supremacist worldview. For more information, please visit PETA.org, 36chambers.com, and embassyofbricksandlogs.com.
