Displaying posters emblazoned with images of suffering pigs crammed into gestation crates and transport trucks, PETA members will converge on the Third Annual Los Angeles Bacon Festival on Saturday to encourage attendees to exercise compassion for pigs and choose delicious, healthy veggie bacon instead of cholesterol- and cruelty-laced animal flesh.
Where: The Studios at Paramount, at the intersection of Melrose Avenue and Windsor Boulevard, Los Angeles
When: Saturday, February 7, 12 p.m.
“Every piece of bacon means that a thinking, feeling individual experienced a miserable life and a terrifying death,” says PETA Executive Vice President Tracy Reiman. “PETA’s motto reads, in part, that ‘animals are not ours to eat,’ and we’re encouraging every would-be bacon fest attendee to try to relate to who’s on their plate—and choose fakin’ bacon instead.”
Given the opportunity and training, pigs can play computer games, turn on heat in a barn, and perform many other sophisticated tasks. Inquisitive and pleasant-natured, pigs can be loyal, playful, and protective companions—but in the meat industry, sows are squeezed into narrow metal stalls barely larger than their own bodies and kept almost constantly pregnant or nursing. Pigs’ tails are chopped off, their teeth are clipped with pliers, and males are castrated—all without any painkillers whatsoever. At slaughterhouses, they’re hung upside down and bled to death, often while still conscious.
