PETA supporters holding photos of caged monkeys will rally at the graduation ceremony of Northwestern University’s Feinberg School of Medicine, where Harvard Medical School Dean George Daley is slated to give the commencement address, demanding that Harvard shut down Margaret Livingstone’s cruel and wasteful experiments.
When: Monday, May 15, 2:30 p.m.
Where: Navy Pier, at the intersection of Park Drive and E. Grand Avenue, Chicago
Livingstone tears baby monkeys away from their mothers and cages them alone, forces them to wear vision-distorting goggles, surgically implants electrodes in their brains, and eventually kills and dissects them in her cruel sensory deprivation studies. She’s even sewn some infants’ eyelids shut for her experiments, which haven’t produced any cures or treatments for humans.
“There’s nowhere to hide from PETA, and Harvard must finally shut down Livingstone’s ghastly experiments,” says PETA Senior Vice President Kathy Guillermo. “Harvard’s leaders will find PETA everywhere they go until they finally close this shop of horrors.”
Earlier this year, more than 380 experts—including primatologist Dr. Jane Goodall, conservationist Dr. Ian Redmond, and Harvard anthropologist Dr. Richard Wrangham—joined PETA and Harvard’s own Animal Law & Policy Clinic to urge the National Institutes of Health to defund Livingstone’s experiments. That action followed a letter last October from 261 scientists around the world to the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences asking it to retract Livingstone’s recent publication, calling her work “unethical” and noting that it fails to advance scientific knowledge.
PETA—whose motto reads, in part, that “animals are not ours to experiment on”—opposes speciesism, a human-supremacist worldview.
