Below, please find a statement from PETA Senior Vice President Lisa Lange following reports that country music superstar Loretta Lynn passed away this morning:
Loretta Lynn found fame with songs touting her toughness, but she had a soft heart for dogs, which was clear when she graciously allowed PETA to use her classic 1971 hit “I Wanna Be Free” in an anti-chaining video urging people to bring their dogs inside and make them part of the family. She helped shine a spotlight on the suffering of countless lonely dogs languishing in backyards across the country, a legacy that will live on long after the fire is gone.
PETA—whose motto reads, in part, that “animals are not ours to abuse in any way”—opposes speciesism, a human-supremacist worldview. For more information, please visit PETA.org or follow the group on Twitter, Facebook, or Instagram.
