Please see the following statement from PETA primate scientist Dr. Lisa Jones-Engel regarding her upcoming attendance at the annual shareholder meeting of Charles River Laboratories on May 8. PETA is a shareholder in the company, and Dr. Jones-Engel will challenge company executives to adopt PETA’s resolution calling for an annual census report on imported primates and the pathogens they harbor.
Shareholders deserve to know whether Charles River is importing, using, or selling wild-caught monkeys or other primates bred on squalid, disease-ridden monkey farms as well as what measures the company is taking to prevent the outbreak of the next pandemic and what, if any, action the company is taking to ensure that already endangered monkeys aren’t wiped off the face of the Earth.
Charles River has avoided accountability for the monkeys it buys and sells for too long, and I plan to present a watertight case for closing that loophole.
