To encourage residents of Maine—one of the country’s “most romantic” states, according to recent surveys—to swap the lobster dinner for a vegan feast this Valentine’s Day, PETA has placed ads on local buses encouraging everyone to “spice it up tonight” with tofu.
“PETA is asking everyone to show some love to animals by leaving them off the Valentine’s Day menu,” says PETA President Ingrid Newkirk. “From lobsters and lambs to hens and humans, we’re all the same when it comes to feeling pain and fear and valuing our own lives—and we all deserve compassion.”
Each person who goes vegan saves nearly 200 animals every year; reduces their risk of suffering from heart disease, diabetes, obesity, and cancer; and dramatically shrinks their carbon footprint. Not only is tofu cheaper than meat, it’s also packed with protein and contains no cholesterol—and while SARS, swine flu, bird flu, and COVID-19 all stemmed from confining and killing animals for food, tofu never started a pandemic.
PETA offers a variety of delicious tofu-based recipes on its website, such as General Tso’s Tofu and Buffalo Tofu-Scramble Breakfast Tacos, and a vegan starter kit filled with more recipes and tips.
PETA—whose motto reads, in part, that “animals are not ours to eat”—opposes speciesism, a human-supremacist worldview. For more information, please visit PETA.org or follow the group on Twitter, Facebook, or Instagram.
