Eyebrows will be raised and dinner plans may be changed in Tucson tomorrow, as a nearly naked PETA supporter will lie next to two giant “turkey carcasses” on a cutting board outside of busy stores to urge onlookers to try to relate to who is on their plate and give birds a break this Thanksgiving by opting for a delicious vegan roast centerpiece.
“Turkeys feel love, joy, pain, fear and value their lives every bit as much as humans do, yet they’re violently slaughtered and sliced to pieces just for a fleeting taste of their flesh,” says PETA Executive Vice President Tracy Reiman. “PETA’s provocative holiday spread encourages everyone to think of the individual behind every trussed-up turkey and opt for a delicious ThanksVegan meal that shows compassion to all.”
Where: 799 N. Park Ave., Tucson
When: Tuesday, November 19, 12 noon
Why: In nature, turkeys spend their days caring for their young, building nests, foraging for food, taking dust baths, and roosting in trees, and they can live for over 10 years. But turkeys raised for food are often slaughtered within their first six months of life—and tens of millions are killed each year for Thanksgiving and Christmas alone. Workers hang the young birds upside down, drag them through an electrified bath, slit their throats, and dump them into scalding-hot defeathering tanks.
PETA—whose motto reads, in part, that “animals are not ours to eat”—points out that Every Animal Is Someone and offers free Empathy Kits for people who need a lesson in kindness. PETA’s free vegan starter kit and “ThanksVegan” guide are filled with tips to help anyone looking to make the switch.
