A Compassionate Fire Department Award is on its way from PETA to Nashua Fire Rescue, which sprang into action last week when a dog named Whiskey fell through the ice on Sandy Pond. Two firefighters from Station 2, Engine 2, Ladder 2 dressed in insulated water-rescue suits to retrieve him and bring him back to shore. He was wrapped in a blanket, warmed in an ambulance, and reunited with his relieved guardian.
“These firefighters didn’t hesitate to jump in and save this dog from his frightening, icy predicament,” says PETA Vice President Colleen O’Brien. “PETA is recognizing Nashua Fire Rescue for having the skills and the compassion that it takes to help both humans and animals in need.”
PETA—whose motto reads, in part, that “animals are not ours to abuse in any way”—reminds all dog guardians to keep their animal companions near them on walks using a leash and a comfortable, secure harness and to keep a close eye on them when they’re outdoors.
Nashua Fire Rescue—which told PETA that it also keeps special oxygen masks designed for companion animals on its trucks for smoke and fire rescues—will receive a framed certificate, a box of delicious vegan cookies, a letter of congratulations, and a copy of The Engine 2 Diet, a Texas firefighter’s 28-day plan for staying in prime firefighting shape by eating plant-based meals.
