“The Milk Marathon Runs on Cruelty.” That’s the message a female-led pack of PETA supporters will send at the Every Woman’s Marathon on Saturday, where they’ll call out the hypocrisy of a women’s race organized by the dairy industry—which systematically sexually assaults female cows and steals their newborn babies so that the milk meant to nourish them can be sold to humans. The women will unfurl a banner showing images of the abuse inflicted upon female cows exploited for their milk—including repeated forced impregnation, calf-cow separation, painfully swollen udders, and eventual slaughter once their exhausted bodies give out. A mobile billboard showing heartbreaking footage of anguished mother cows chasing after their stolen babies will circle the event.

The action will be preceded by a prerace Wellness Fair & Expo on Friday, where protesters will urge attendees to stand in solidarity with all females—including cows in the dairy industry.

“This miserable milk PR stunt is using women’s blood, sweat, and tears to push a product derived from the misery of mother cows,” says PETA Senior Vice President Colleen O’Brien. “PETA is calling on runners and people everywhere to go the extra mile for females of all species by going vegan.”

Where: 2 E. Bay Street, Savannah

When: Saturday, November 16, 6:30 a.m.

Why: Just like human mothers, female cows produce milk only when they’re pregnant or nursing, have deep maternal instincts, and will go to great lengths to protect their babies. In the dairy industry, cows are repeatedly forcibly inseminated (raped)—workers insert an arm into the cow’s rectum and a metal rod to deliver semen into her vagina. Newborn males are routinely slaughtered for veal, while female calves endure the same fate as their mothers until their bodies wear out from repeated pregnancies.

Each person who goes vegan spares nearly 200 animals every year, dramatically shrinks their food-related carbon footprint and slashes their risk of suffering from cancer, heart disease, strokes, diabetes, and obesity. PETA’s free vegan starter kit is filled with tips to help anyone looking to make the switch.

PETA—whose motto reads, in part, that “animals are not ours to eat”—points out that Every Animal Is Someone and offers free Empathy Kits for people who need a lesson in kindness. For more information, please visit PETA.org or follow PETA on X, Facebook, or Instagram.
