What: On Saturday, Nurse Jackie and The Sopranos star Edie Falco will introduce PETA President Ingrid Newkirk as she kicks off her new speaking tour at a special event in Fort Lauderdale. Newkirk’s unique and thought-provoking talk, “We Are All Animals,” explores the common links that bind various forms of discrimination and the state of the animal kingdom—and reveals why PETA’s motto reads, “Animals are not ours to eat, wear, experiment on, use for entertainment, or abuse in any other way.”
When: Saturday, March 24, 4 p.m.
Where: Broward Center for the Performing Arts, 201 S.W. Fifth Ave., Fort Lauderdale
“Since its founding in 1980, PETA’s message has been that when it comes to feelings such as pain, hunger, and thirst, a rat is a pig is a dog is a boy,” says Newkirk, who will be traveling around the world on her speaking tour. “Some of us may have feathers, some of us may have fins, and some of us may have just the skin we were born in, but every living, feeling being deserves respect and understanding.”
During the event, Nanci Alexander—owner of Fort Lauderdale’s premiere gourmet vegan restaurant, Sublime Restaurant & Bar—will present the 2018 Nanci Alexander Activist Award to Mike “Crank” Fremgen, a New York City sanitation worker who never hesitates to rescue pigeons, squirrels, or kittens in need. Delicious vegan treats will be served immediately after Newkirk’s talk.
