During spring break, PETA will fly a banner above busy local beaches that proclaims, “Tofu Never Caused a Pandemic. Go Vegan. PETA.” The message hopes to reach beachgoers who may have their heads in the sand when it comes to realizing the risks inherent in factory farming animals for food.
When: Saturday, March 20, 12 noon–2 p.m.
Where: The plane will fly over beaches from South Beach in Miami to Fort Lauderdale
“While animal-borne diseases thrive in meat markets and slaughterhouses, tofu is clean and healthy and can be prepared in more ways than there are fish in the sea,” says PETA Executive Vice President Tracy Reiman. “PETA is reminding revelers that without deadly viruses, life’s a beach—and things will go swimmingly when they choose delicious, versatile vegan foods.”
Not only is tofu cheaper than meat, it also is packed with protein, contains zero cholesterol, and lowers a person’s risk of suffering from heart disease, diabetes, cancer, and numerous other life-threatening health issues. COVID-19 is believed to have originated in a live-animal market, where animals are sold for food. Influenza viruses have originated in pigs and chickens used for food—but never in tofu.
Photos will be available after the event. PETA—whose motto reads, in part, that “animals are not ours to eat”—opposes speciesism, which is a human-supremacist worldview. For more information, please visit PETA.org or follow the group on Twitter, Facebook, or Instagram.
