There’s a new contender in the “Chicken Sandwich Wars”! PETA is releasing its list of the Top Vegan Chicken Sandwiches of 2019 in the U.S.—and the Not Chicken Sandwich from Hot Chicken Takeover has nabbed a spot on the list. The award-winning sandwich features a juicy house-made seitan chicken patty topped with slaw and fresh pickles.
“Today’s public is hungry for delicious vegan fare like Hot Chicken Takeover’s succulent and satisfying Not Chicken Sandwich,” says PETA Executive Vice President Tracy Reiman. “All the winners on PETA’s list soar high above old, meaty chicken sandwiches, which are basic, boring, and cruel to birds.”
PETA notes that vegan chicken sandwiches contain none of the saturated animal fat or cholesterol found in their meat-based counterparts—and they spare animals immense suffering. In today’s meat industry, chickens are crammed by the tens of thousands into filthy sheds and bred to grow such unnaturally large upper bodies that their legs often become crippled under the weight. At the slaughterhouse, their throats are cut, often while they’re still conscious, and many are scalded to death in defeathering tanks. Every person who goes vegan saves the lives of nearly 200 animals every year.
Other winners include the Nashville Hot Chickin’ Sandwich from national chain Veggie Grill, the Fried “Chicken” Sandwich from Nashville’s Vege-licious Cafe, and the OG Sando from Los Angeles’ Lettuce Feast.
PETA—whose motto reads, in part, that “animals are not ours to eat”—opposes speciesism, which is a human-supremacist worldview. For more information and to view the complete list, please visit PETA.org or click here.
