After Lily Allen casually spoke of dumping her adopted dog, Mary, at the shelter because she had chewed her families’ passports on the latest episode of her Miss Me? podcast, PETA U.K. fired off a pointed letter calling out the singer for abandoning her dog. And because the singer stated that she will soon plan to acquire another dog, the group is also sending her a mechanical dog toy, writing, “It really is the only animal you should bring into your home.”

“While you could get new passports and rebook your flights, Mary may spend many months in the shelter waiting for a new family – if she’s lucky enough to find one at all,” PETA U.K. Vice President Elisa Allen wrote in her letter to Lily. “They should never be treated as accessories to be discarded when they become inconvenient.”
PETA notes that every year, hundreds of thousands of dogs and cats end up in shelters and that many of them have to be euthanized simply because there aren’t enough good homes for them. The group also notes that life with an animal companion can be extremely rewarding, but it’s also a huge responsibility that takes time, resources, patience, and commitment.
PETA—whose motto reads, in part, that “animals are not ours to abuse in any way”—points out that Every Animal Is Someone and offers free Empathy Kits for people who need a lesson in kindness.
