At rush hour on Monday, a group of PETA supporters will unfurl a gigantic banner from a busy overpass on I-465 showing graphic images of suffering pigs taken from whistleblower footage released by PETA. The footage is part of an investigation into a former supplier to JBS USA, the nation’s second-largest pig slaughterer, whose Swift brands are sold at Kroger. PETA protesters will then descend on a Kroger store on Michigan Street to highlight the suffering behind all the meat sold there and urge shoppers to opt for vegan foods.
When: Monday, November 25, 8 a.m. (banner drop); 12 noon (protest)
Where: Near the intersection of Madison Avenue and Lick Creek Parkway S. Drive (over I-465), Indianapolis (banner drop); Kroger, 227 W. Michigan St., Indianapolis (protest)
The footage, taken at East Fork Farms, shows pigs with bloody open sores, mother pigs so injured that they could barely move, dying piglets, and dead ones left to rot alongside their surviving siblings. A worker cut off piglets’ tails without any pain relief and then threw the animals through the air. The manure pit under the slatted floor was brimming with feces and urine, forcing pigs to stand and lie amid their own waste. The dilapidated sheds teemed with rats, roaches, and maggots and were littered with the decomposing bodies, tails, and heads of dead piglets.
“Behind every pork and bacon package sold at Kroger is filth and the pain and fear of pigs who died violently,” says PETA Executive Vice President Tracy Reiman. “PETA is calling on shoppers to decimate meat sales by opting for vegan foods instead.”
PETA—whose motto reads, in part, that “animals are not ours to eat”—opposes speciesism, which is a human-supremacist worldview. For more information, please visit PETA.org.
