What:    Holding signs in the shape of lollipops that proclaim, “Give Peas a Chance: Go Vegan!” PETA’s giant, dancing vegetable mascots—Colonel Corn and Chris P. Carrot—will distribute hundreds of free vegan sandwiches from local eatery Bean Vegan Cuisine on International Day of Peace to promote nonviolence in food production. PETA has also placed billboards reading, “Love One Another, as I Have Loved You. —John 13:34. Show Compassion for All. Go Vegan,” at 6602 E. Independence Blvd., facing west, and 4102 Monroe Rd., facing east, in Charlotte.

When:    Thursday, September 21, 12 noon

Where:    Intersection of Tryon and Trade streets, Charlotte

“Working for peace begins with breakfast,” says PETA President Ingrid Newkirk. “PETA asks everyone to try to relate to who ends up on the plate and, by doing so, expand our compassion to all living, feeling beings.”

PETA—whose motto reads, in part, that “animals are not ours to eat”—points out that animals used for food experience joy, pain, fear, love, and grief and value their lives, just as humans do. But in today’s meat and dairy industries, cows are forcibly separated from their beloved calves, chickens’ throats are cut while they’re still conscious, piglets are castrated without painkillers, and fish are cut open while they’re still alive.
