Jennifer Lopez‘s stunning Hustlers performance is getting Oscar buzz—but her furry wardrobe in the film is raising eyebrows. That’s why PETA sent the star a gift this morning: a luxurious faux-fur vest from Hoodlamb, along with a note urging her to go fur-free.
“Up to 18 foxes were killed to make Jennifer Lopez’s Hustlers coat, and many more have died for her red carpet ensembles,” says PETA Senior Vice President Lisa Lange. “She’s too beautiful to wear something so ugly, and PETA is asking her to go faux—because kindness don’t cost a thing.”
PETA—whose motto reads, in part, that “animals are not ours to wear”—opposes speciesism, which is a human-supremacist worldview, and more information about the fur industry is available here.
PETA’s letter to Lopez follows.
Dear Jennifer,
As excited as we and so many of your fans were to see Hustlers, we couldn’t help but notice your character’s fur coat and wanted to send along a stunning cruelty-free replacement for your second act.
Life can be cruel, but it’s time to face what’s wrong or right. More than a dozen foxes may have been killed in order to make your costume—and many more animals have died for the fur you’ve been photographed wearing while out and about.
The world is already violent enough, so won’t you please, please help by simply not wearing the real skins of animals who were abused and violently killed? If you could just see firsthand what foxes, minks, and other animals go through, we know you wouldn’t tell us, “Olvidame y pega la vuelta.”
We know what the Bronx means to you, and we’d be honored to help facilitate a donation of your fur items to the homeless community there, who you well know need the warmth this winter. In the past, we’ve given donated fur coats—some of which came from other wonderful women, including Anjelica Huston, Mariah Carey, and Mary Tyler Moore—to homeless shelters in the U.S. and to displaced refugees in Afghanistan, Mongolia, and Syria.
You’re too beautiful to wear something so ugly—and as someone who had a little and now has a lot, please don’t forget that kindness don’t cost a thing. Get right, and go faux!
Muy atentamente,
Alicia Aguayo
