Soaking up the sun alongside his beloved adopted dog, Hero, The Mule actor Ignacio Serricchio appears in a new PETA Latino ad that proclaims, “Family Is Family.” It goes on to say, “Dogs are family. Never chain them or leave them outdoors. Let them live indoors, and give them love, respect, and lots of attention.”
“I don’t consider Hero to be just my pet—he’s my partner,” says Serricchio. “Taking him with me everywhere I go makes the experiences 10 times better. I saved his life when I rescued him from a man who abused him, and a year later, he saved mine after I lost my little brother. We need each other, and we share the same adventurous spirit and love for people. He’s a member of the family, and I encourage everyone who has animal companions to take their time to train them with lots of praise and treats and give them all the love and attention that they deserve.”
Not every dog is as fortunate as Hero is: Every year, more than 6 million dogs and cats end up in U.S. animal shelters and about half of them have to be euthanized simply because there aren’t enough good homes for them. That’s why PETA (whose motto reads, in part, that “animals are not ours to abuse in any way”) encourages caring people to follow Serricchio’s lead and adopt instead of buying from breeders or pet shops. The group tells guardians not to chain or crate dogs—instead, they should let them live inside with their human families, where they’re safe from the elements, attacks by other animals, and people who would do them harm.
Serricchio is part of a long list of celebrities—including Kate del Castillo, Nicholas Gonzalez, Dulce María, Edward James Olmos, and Alicia Machado—who’ve teamed up with PETA Latino to promote kindness to animals.
