Today, following a meeting with PETA, Petco announced that it will stop selling rabbits in stores and is “recommitting to an adoption-only policy for rabbits.” The company had recently reneged on its 2008 pledge made after a national campaign led by PETA and promoted by rabbit adoption organizations and other animal protection groups. Below, please find a statement from PETA Executive Vice President Tracy Reiman:
Somebunny at Petco listened to PETA, House Rabbit Society, and the dozens of other rabbit groups that pointed out that such sales fuel the overpopulation crisis, undermine shelter efforts, and put vulnerable, delicate animals into the hands of shoppers who aren’t prepared to meet their needs. We’re cheering on Petco’s return to its adoption-only policy and reminding everyone that “adopt—don’t shop” is always the right choice when it comes to dogs, rabbits, or any other animal.
PETA—whose motto reads, in part, that “animals are not ours to abuse in any way”—points out that Every Animal Is Someone and offers free Empathy Kits for people who need a lesson in kindness. For more information, please visit PETA.org or follow the group on X, Facebook, or Instagram.
