Dressed as a gigantic silver fork, a PETA member holding a sign proclaiming, “Meat Is Not Green,” will give away free vegan snacks to the environmentalists gathering in Austin for the Shield the People Climate March. PETA—whose motto reads, in part, that “animals are not ours to eat”—will also be at the People’s Climate March in New York City to remind everyone that the best way to help the environment is to go vegan.
When: Sunday, September 21, 10:30 a.m.
Where: 110 Congress Ave. (near the intersection with E. Fifth Street), Austin
“Between gobbling up our natural resources and polluting the soil, water, and air, the meat industry is as toxic to the Earth as it is to human health and, of course, animals,” says PETA Director of Campaigns Sarah King. “PETA’s gigantic piece of silverware will remind Austinites that when it comes to fighting climate change, there’s no tool more powerful than your fork.”
According to the United Nations, raising animals for food is “a top contributor to the most serious environmental problems, at every scale from local to global.” The United Nations has also stressed that a global shift toward a vegan diet is vital if we are to combat the worst effects of climate change.
