“Leave me in peace, not in pieces!” That’s the message a gigantic turkey is sending as she looks down over Times Square from her sky-high perch ahead of Thanksgiving, courtesy of PETA. The humongous hen confronts viewers with an impassioned plea to go vegan and save birds like her from a miserable life and terrifying death in the meat industry.
PETA points out that in nature, turkeys spend their days foraging, caring for their babies, building nests, keeping clean by taking dust baths, and roosting in trees out of reach of predators, and they can live for over 10 years. But in the meat industry, they’re crammed into filthy sheds and slaughtered within their first six months of life. PETA offers an in-depth “ThanksVegan” guide packed with recipes, ingredient swaps, and tips for hosting a delicious, hearty, and cruelty-free holiday that’s sure to please everyone.
“Turkeys love to have their feathers stroked and to sing along with music, but tens of millions are violently slaughtered for Thanksgiving and Christmas alone,” says PETA Senior Vice President Colleen O’Brien. “PETA is calling on compassionate people everywhere to see turkeys for who they are and give them—and all other animals—a break this Thanksgiving and beyond.”
PETA’s billboard is located in Times Square at 1500 Broadway.
PETA—whose motto reads, in part, that “animals are not ours to eat”—points out that Every Animal Is Someone and offers free Empathy Kits for people who need a lesson in kindness. For more information, please visit PETA.org or follow the group on X, Facebook, or Instagram.
