Giant ‘Mouse’ to Protest Live-Animal Exhibit at New York City Gallery
PETA Protest Will Call for Removal of Mice Used in Joseph Grazi’s Exhibition at Castle Fitzjohns Gallery

What: On Saturday, a giant PETA “mouse” with a sign proclaiming, “Terrifying Mice Is Cruelty, Not Art,” will descend on Castle Fitzjohns Gallery to denounce the use of live mice in Joseph Grazi’s “Prehysteria” exhibit and to demand that the gallery remove the mice, send them to safe adoptive homes, and enact a policy prohibiting the use of live animals in future exhibitions. Mice in Grazi’s cruel show are trapped under see-through floorboards over which visitors walk, putting the vulnerable animals in constant fear of being trampled.

“It’s simply unacceptable to display prey animals, who are naturally frightened of humans, in plexiglass boxes underfoot with no means of escape,” says PETA Executive Vice President Tracy Reiman. “PETA is urging Castle Fitzjohns Gallery to remove the terrorized mice from this exhibition and never again display work that uses distressed living beings.”
PETA—whose motto reads, in part, that “animals are not ours to use for entertainment”—notes that mice are highly social animals who experience fear, loneliness, and pain, just as humans do. They have nervous systems similar to our own and easily bond with each other and kind human guardians. Using animatronic mice in this exhibit would have the same effect while still being kind to animals.
