Hot diggity dog! After Golden kindly chose to forego fireworks this Fourth of July and for the foreseeable future, citing, in part, the noise impact on companion animals, PETA will be providing the city with 100 delicious meat-free hot dogs with all the trimmings to make the city’s Independence Day celebration at Lions Park even more animal-friendly.

“PETA is delighted to treat local patriots to delicious vegan franks that deliver tons of flavor with none of the cholesterol or cruelty present in their meaty counterparts,” says PETA Senior Vice President Colleen O’Brien. “We urge other cities to learn from Golden and celebrate Independence Day in a way that’s kind to all by offering tasty vegan options and fireworks-free festivities.”

In the meat industry, workers chop off pigs’ tails, clip their teeth with pliers, and castrate the males—all without pain relief—and they cram cows into cramped, filthy feedlots with no protection from the elements. At slaughterhouses, workers shoot animals in the head with a captive-bolt gun, hang them up by one leg, and cut their throats—often while they’re still conscious. Everyone who goes vegan spares the lives of nearly 200 animals a year; reduces their own risk of developing heart disease, diabetes, and cancer; and dramatically shrinks their carbon footprint. PETA offers a free vegan starter kit for those ready to make the switch.

In June, PETA gave Golden a Compassionate City Award for its decision to cancel Fourth of July fireworks, sparing animals the terrifying booms and blasts. Dogs and cats have been known to jump fences or break through windows and screen doors to try to escape the noise. Other animals, including wildlife, are hit by cars when they run onto roads.

PETA—whose motto reads, in part, that “animals are not ours to abuse in any way”—points out that Every Animal Is Someone and offers free Empathy Kits for people who need a lesson in kindness. For more information, please visit PETA.org or follow the group on X, Facebook, or Instagram.
