Free Spay/Neuter on Offer at Council Member’s Food Drive

Council Member Sharon P. Scott’s 20th annual Holiday Food Drive for local residents in need starts on Wednesday, and for the sixth year running, PETA is taking part in the event. For every 10 nonperishable vegan food items contributed to the drive through PETA—such as canned vegetables, beans, or soups—the group’s mobile spay/neuter clinics will “snip” a family’s dog or cat for free.
When: Wednesday, December 15, 8 a.m.
Where: Denbigh Community Center, 15198 Warwick Blvd. (near the intersection with Mercer Lane), Newport News

“No one deserves to be turned away during the holidays, whether a person in need or a family’s dog or cat,” says Scott. “We’re happy to work with PETA to make this a joyous season for all members of our community.”
Around 70 million dogs and cats are homeless in the U.S. at any given time. An estimated 10% of them end up in animal shelters, where many must eventually be euthanized for reasons including injury, illness, old age, emotional and psychological damage, and a lack of good homes. According to reports submitted to the Virginia Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services, Virginia shelters took in more than 222,000 lost and unwanted companion animals last year. The solution is simple: spaying and neutering.
“With just one visit, locals can help families tuck into nourishing meals and keep more animals from being born into a world already bursting at the seams with unwanted ones,” says PETA Senior Vice President Daphna Nachminovitch. “PETA is delighted to have Council Member Scott by our side as we extend her generous spirit to the four-legged residents of Newport News and beyond.”
