Ahead of World Oceans Day (June 8), PETA is casting out copies of its A Fish’s Life comic book to Edith L. Frierson Elementary School—where students went on fishing and crabbing trips this year—to encourage students to protect all marine life by leaving fish off hooks and their plates. This full-color comic book, which is designed for students in kindergarten through fifth grade, uses lovable characters to help kids see what fishing is like from the perspective of sea animals and to help them understand why doing anything that harms animals is bullying.

“Fish are smart, social animals who make friends with their ‘schoolmates,’ enjoy spending time with their families, and don’t want to be hurt any more than we would,” says PETA Executive Vice President Tracy Reiman. “With PETA’s kid-friendly comic books, students can hone their reading skills while learning that fish are friends, not food, and that all animals deserve our consideration and kindness.”

Each person who goes vegan spares nearly 200 animals every year, dramatically shrinks their carbon footprint, and avoids ingesting the many toxic chemicals found in the flesh of fish, including mercury, lead, and polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs). PETA offers a kid’s guide to going vegan and a free vegan starter kit on its website for those ready to make the switch.

PETA—whose motto reads, in part, that “animals are not ours to eat or abuse in any other way”—points out that Every Animal Is Someone and offers free Empathy Kits for people who need a lesson in kindness. For more information, please visit PETA.org or follow the group on X, Facebook, or Instagram.
