As overnight temperatures continue to drop below freezing, hip-hop legend and actor Eve stars in PETA billboards going up on Chicago’s South Side that proclaim, “Unchain Your Friends. Chained Dogs Suffer Every Day.”
One billboard is located at the intersection of W. Madison Street and S. Kedzie Avenue on the overpass facing west, and the second billboard will go up at the end of the week at the intersection of W. 87th Street and S. Damen Avenue, facing west.
To make sure that Eve’s message reaches all of Chicagoland, PETA is also running a 30-second TV spot throughout the week on WMAQ-TV (NBC) and WFLD (FOX) in which the Barbershop star calls footage of dogs who are chained outside in the freezing cold and pleading for affection the “saddest video I’ve ever seen.” She adds, “Keeping your dog outside doesn’t make you tough or cool—it just makes you a bully. Please bring your dogs inside and treat them as part of the family. And if you see a chained dog, please speak up. Because if not you, then who?”
PETA—whose motto reads, in part, that “animals are not ours to abuse in any way”—receives numerous reports every year of dogs who have suffered and died after being chained and left outside 24/7. Animals have starved to death, died of hypothermia, and been left to rot on a chain.
Eve’s ads in Chicago are part of a nationwide ad blitz that includes billboards and TV spots in the star’s hometown of Philadelphia as well as Baltimore; Cleveland; Detroit; Norfolk, Virginia; Terre Haute, Indiana; Washington, D.C.; and Weldon, North Carolina. Eve is part of a growing list of celebrities—including Jhené Aiko, Kid Ink, P!nk, Mýa, TLC’s Chilli, Kesha, Sia, and many others—who have teamed up with PETA to promote kindness to animals.
