A box of delicious orca-shaped vegan chocolates is on its way to DF Stauffer Biscuit Company as a thank-you from PETA for its recent decision to end production and sale of SeaWorld-branded Shamu cheddar whale crackers. The company agreed to eliminate the crackers after learning from PETA that orcas suffer physically and psychologically when they are separated from their families and forced to perform circus-style tricks in tiny concrete tanks.
“DF Stauffer Biscuit Company is following the lead of compassionate consumers, who are ditching brands that partner with SeaWorld’s sinking business,” says PETA Executive Vice President Tracy Reiman. “Stauffer’s kind decision not to support SeaWorld’s egregious cruelty makes sound business sense.”
DF Stauffer Biscuit Company joins Mattel (which no longer makes its SeaWorld Trainer Barbie), Southwest Airlines, Taco Bell, and dozens of other companies in cutting ties with SeaWorld. Since the release of Blackfish, attendance at the abusement parks has dropped, and SeaWorld was recently named one of “America’s Most Hated Companies.”
PETA—whose motto reads, in part, that “animals are not ours to use for entertainment”—points out that if moved to ocean sanctuaries, the orcas could be rehabilitated and would finally have the opportunity to swim freely and engage in natural behavior with minimal human interaction.
