Vegan soul food is killing it nationwide as demand soars for delicious down-home cooking that satisfies cravings without clogging arteries or causing animal suffering. That’s why PETA has compiled a list of the top vegan soul food joints across the country—and West Village favorite Detroit Vegan Soul has earned a prime spot for its hearty and healthy fare.
With robust entrées such as the Seitan Pepper Steak and the “Catfish” Tofu Sandwich, plus hit-the-spot sides like candied yams and cornbread muffins, it’s no wonder that Detroit has been hailed by CNN as “[t]he shiniest rising star in the vegan world” set to open a second location in Grandmont-Rosedale next month.
“Thanks to Detroit Vegan Soul, diners can enjoy all the lip-smacking flavor of classic soul food—minus the cruelty and cholesterol,” says PETA Executive Vice President Tracy Remain. “PETA is calling on soul food lovers everywhere to satisfy their cravings with a hearty and heart-healthy vegan dish today.”
PETA—whose motto reads, in part, that “animals are not ours to eat”—notes that in addition to saving more than 100 animals every year from immense suffering, going vegan reduces diners’ chances of developing heart disease by a whopping 32 percent, according to a large-scale study conducted by Oxford University. Leading medical experts have determined that healthy vegan meals can even reverse heart disease in people who already have clogged arteries. In addition, going vegan reduces one’s risk of suffering from diabetes, obesity, and cancer.
