With interest in vegan eating soaring—and plant-based proteins on track to reach $25 billion in sales in Canada by 2035—just about every Thanksgiving gathering this year is bound to have at least one guest who avoids meat, eggs, or dairy. To help families ensure that everyone can find something to enjoy at the holiday table, PETA is sharing tips for delicious vegan Thanksgiving dishes.
For the main course, shoppers will find plenty of vegan roasts at just about every grocery store—and many all-vegan shops like Good Rebel and Vegan Supply will ship to anywhere in Canada. Our favourites include Gardein’s Plant-Based Herbed Stuffed Turk’y roast, Field Roast’s Sage & Garlic Plant-Based Celebration Roast, and Tofurky’s Plant-Based Ham Style Roast with Amber Ale Glaze. Those who prefer Jiggs dinner can easily prepare a vegan feast using nondairy butter (try Becel’s Plant Butter) and vegan corned beef made from tempeh or seitan. Hearty tourtière is just as simple to veganize with Yves Veggie Cuisine’s Original Veggie Ground Round.
Most appetizers, sides, and desserts can be made vegan just by swapping out eggs, milk, and butter for animal-free options—like in this simple stuffing recipe that goes perfectly with a vegan roast. Adventurous home cooks can also try making something new, such as these delicious Maple-Sriracha Roasted Brussels Sprouts with Cranberry Wild Rice. Even traditional poutine râpée can be made vegan. Just try it with this fantastic “pork belly” made with seitan. For dessert, we love this vegan pumpkin cheesecake recipe—and Canadians who crave rich butter tarts can make them with non-dairy butter and egg replacers. PETA’s website offers even more recipes that you’re welcome to share, plus a guide to hosting the ultimate “ThanksVegan” celebration.
Like all animals, turkeys feel pain and fear and value their lives—which is why we encourage people to show them compassion around the holidays and all year long by opting for delicious vegan meals. PETA has a free vegan starter kit on our website for anyone looking to make the switch.
PETA—whose motto reads, in part, that “animals are not ours to eat”—points out that Every Animal Is Someone and offers free Empathy Kits for people who need a lesson in kindness. For more information, please visit PETA.org or follow the group on X, Facebook, or Instagram.
