This Thursday, PETA’s “climate change cow” will moove to Georgetown University’s Climate Forum in Washington, D.C., where she’ll call on candidates to take action to combat animal agriculture’s massive contribution to climate change. The “cow”—who was recently at the Democratic Party Convention and chewed the cud with candidates Joe Biden and Cory Booker—will also drop in on candidate Bill Weld’s “Future for Weld Kickoff” event at the Right Proper Brewing Company Shaw Brewpub & Kitchen.
When: Thursday, September 19, 8:30 a.m. onward
Where: The McCourt School of Public Policy, at the intersection of 37th and O Streets N.W., Old North #100, Washington, D.C.
A recent analysis of the food industry’s impact on the environment concluded that cutting beef consumption by 90% and dairy milk consumption by 60% in Western countries is essential in order to scale back the climate crisis. More than 90% of the Amazon rainforest that’s been cleared since 1970 is used for international meat production, which is a major contributor to pollution, land degradation, water shortages, and habitat destruction. Animal agriculture alone is responsible for nearly one-fifth of human-induced greenhouse-gas emissions.
“The meat and dairy industries are not only killing animals but also guzzling up natural resources, decimating land and wildlife, spewing out contaminants, and disrupting weather patterns,” says PETA Executive Vice President Tracy Reiman. “PETA’s ‘climate change cow’ will be at this and other events to urge everyone to embrace a vegan way of life in the face of the climate crisis.”
PETA—whose motto reads, in part, that “animals are not ours to eat”—opposes speciesism, which is a human-supremacist worldview. For more information, please visit PETA.org.
