Just in time for the holidays, a fleet of PETA ads encouraging kindness to animals has gone up around the Riverchase Galleria, Alabama’s largest mall. Posters promoting vegan meals are located on level one near the food court and show images of a cow, chicken, pig, and fish next to the words “I’m ME, Not MEAT. See the Individual. Go Vegan.” PETA’s anti-wool ad, which shows a lovable lamb alongside the words “I Am Not a Sweater, a Scarf, or a ‘Lamb Chop.’ I Am a Living Being—Just Like You,” is located near various clothing stores, such as Belk, J.C. Penney, Macy’s, Sears, and Von Maur on level two. The ads will be up through the first week of December.
“Just like us, animals are made of flesh and blood, feel pain and fear, and value their lives,” says PETA Executive Vice President Tracy Reiman. “PETA’s thought-provoking ads will show shoppers that by simply choosing cruelty-free clothes and hearty vegan meals, we can all make a world of difference for animals this holiday season.”
PETA—whose motto reads, in part, that “animals are not ours to eat or wear”—notes that in today’s meat industry, chickens’ throats are cut while they’re still conscious, piglets are castrated without painkillers, cows are hung upside down and bled to death, and fish are cut open while they’re still alive on the decks of boats. In the dairy industry, cows are repeatedly artificially inseminated until their bodies give out and they’re slaughtered for cheap meat. PETA video exposés of the wool industry have revealed that sheep are beaten, stomped on, kicked, and even skinned alive.
