Los Angeles –
Below, please find a statement from PETA Senior Vice President Lisa Lange in response to reports that the Los Angeles City Council voted this morning to end the issuance of dog-breeding permits when shelters are at 75% capacity or over:
Los Angeles legislators have taken their first decisive action to curb the city’s ballooning homeless-animal overpopulation crisis by hitting it at the source: the breeders who’ve been churning out even more animals in a city already bursting with abandoned dogs and cats. PETA is celebrating that L.A. is now one step closer to getting its arms around this emergency, and we’re calling on Mayor Karen Bass and Los Angeles Animal Services to do their parts, which means enforcing the existing spay/neuter law and requiring shelters to offer refuge to everyone in need.
The vote follows a vigorous PETA campaign asserting that countless animals are suffering in Los Angeles because of Mayor Bass’ mismanagement of one of the largest animal shelter systems in the country, which is now refusing to accept stray animals and instructing residents to dump them on the street in a bid to reach “no-kill” status. PETA members have spoken in support of the ordinance passed this morning, plastered flyers across the city urging the mayor to rethink her failed approach, and held a huge rally outside city hall in behalf of all the homeless animals being tormented in the City of Angels.
PETA—whose motto reads, in part, that “animals are not ours to abuse in any way”—points out that Every Animal Is Someone and offers free Empathy Kits for people who need a lesson in kindness. For more information, please visit PETA.org or follow the group on X, Facebook, or Instagram.
