Revelers are getting an extra incentive to raise a glass of beer, green or otherwise, this St. Patrick’s Day: 1,000 free coasters from PETA reading, “Beer Is Healthier Than Milk,” which will be in bars alongside the St. Patrick’s Day Parade route—and in other Irish pubs throughout the city—to point out that choosing beer over milk can be better for humans (unlike milk, beer contains no fat or cholesterol), for the planet (the dairy industry is a major greenhouse-gas producer), and for cows (whose beloved calves are torn away from them so that the milk the calves are supposed to drink can be sold in grocery stores.)
“Beer makes you feel good, sure, but it’s also good for you when compared to cow’s milk, and the hops and malt that go into it don’t produce methane that contributes to the hole in the ozone,” says PETA Senior Vice President Colleen O’Brien.
There is evidence that dairy foods, unlike green leafy vegetables and nuts (which contain more digestible calcium), contribute to osteoporosis by depleting bone mass. Meanwhile, more than 100 prospective studies show that moderate alcohol consumption can lower the risk of strokes caused by clotting and death from cardiovascular causes. Choosing beer over milk also spares gentle animals considerable suffering, as cows in the dairy industry are artificially inseminated—not a pleasant experience—and then sent to slaughter when their bodies give out.
PETA—whose motto reads, in part, that “animals are not ours to abuse in any way”—opposes speciesism, a human-supremacist worldview. For more information, please visit PETA.org or follow the group on Twitter, Facebook, or Instagram.
The coasters were distributed at the following bars along or near the St. Patrick’s Day Parade and pub crawl route: Parnell’s Pub, McCarthy’s Downtown, Carney’s Top o’ the Flats, Flannery’s Pub, The Harp, The Old Angle Tavern, Merry Arts Pub & Grille, O’Donnell’s Pub, McNamara’s Pub, and Masthead Brewing Co.
