Nine-year-old Baton Rouge resident Dane Showalter has just been named one of the top four male finalists in PETA Kids’ 2015 Cutest Vegan Kids contest—and now it’s up to voters to help PETA Kids decide whether it should select him to take home the top prize. Two winners—one girl and one boy—will each receive a trophy, a cruelty-free prize pack, and a year’s worth of bragging rights.
A lifelong vegan, Dane eagerly shares his delicious vegan snacks, such as fresh fruits and dairy-free cheeses, with his many curious friends and family members, who are continually impressed by his boundless energy. Devoted to caring for animals, Dane volunteers to play with the dogs at his local animal shelter and donates much of his neighborhood dog-walking earnings to animals in need. When he’s not busy helping animals, he can be found reading up on paleontology and even conducting his own science experiments in his home laboratory.
“Dane’s kindness and enthusiasm for helping animals are already an inspiration to people of all ages,” says PETA Director of Youth Outreach and Campaigns Marta Holmberg. “All the kids who entered the contest are winners in PETA Kids’ book because they’ve made the switch to healthier, animal-friendly foods.”
More and more people go vegan every year. Besides the indisputable health benefits of ditching meat and other unhealthy animal products, vegans, on average, have a smaller carbon footprint than their meat-eating counterparts, and each vegan saves the lives of more than 100 animals each year.
Voting on the finalists to help PETA Kids decide whom it should choose as the winners runs until April 10, and the two winners will be announced on April 13. PETA Kids, whose motto reads, in part, that “animals are not ours to eat,” will select the winners based on several factors, including vote count. See the full contest details here.
