On Tuesday, PETA supporters will descend on a PetSmart in Phoenix with giant blown-up photos of sick, starving, and rotting animals at the store’s suppliers. A recent 15-week PETA video investigation revealed reptiles with decomposing limbs as well as killing practices that ranged from gassing animals in plastic bags to setting them aside “to die and waste away”—with almost no inspections or action from PetSmart representatives to correct the situation. Another recent PETA exposé of a supplier revealed that small animals were warehoused in plastic bins and rodents were crammed into plastic bags and frozen alive.

“PetSmart uses suppliers with filthy, crowded warehouses where live animals suffer next to dead ones in barren bins—without food, water, or vital veterinary care,” says PETA Senior Vice President of Cruelty Investigations Daphna Nachminovitch. “PETA urges shoppers to fight cruelty to animals by avoiding PetSmart and choosing a store that sells only supplies, not live animals.”
PETA—whose motto reads, in part, that “animals are not ours to abuse in any way”—has released six exposés that reveal unsanitary, abusive conditions for animals who are bred for sale at big-box pet stores.
