‘What Can I Do to Help Animals?’ LOTS!

Issue 3|Summer 2024

12 Ways You Might Not Have Considered

Activism is vital. Luckily, there are opportunities every day to help animals and to empower others to do the same. Catch these creative ways PETA supporters have seized the day. Then tell us about your achievements at [email protected] and you may be featured in PETA Global.

1. Clue People In

Melanie spoke up to fellow cruisers about an advertised “swim with dolphins” excursion, and everyone skipped it – along with swims with stingrays and captive turtles. Afterward, she wrote to ask the cruise line to nix all animal encounters. Always weigh in!

2. Cook to Teach ’Em All a Good Lesson

When his school baking competition announced a circus theme, Brooks made a vegan cake decorated with human performers. His display included recipe cards and information about how circuses harm animals – and got a lot of positive comments. What opportunities can you create?

3. Turn Dog Walks Into Dog Talks

Alida and Susan hand out companion animal adoption leaflets and have lots of friendly conversations with dog guardians about the importance of spaying and neutering. They also volunteer every day to walk the dogs at their local animal shelter. Going to the dog park? We have materials you can give out – just ask!

4. Save a Small Animal; Open a Mind

Casey spotted these stickers on glue traps at Lowe’s and other hardware stores that still sell the cruel devices. And Carla saw stickers about forced monkey labor in the Thai coconut industry on cans at Whole Foods, which still carries Thai coconut milk. There are lots of stickers at PETA Literature.

5. Be a Trip Advisor

PETA staffer Michelle holds a sign that reads, "GOD SAVE THE BEARS! USE FAUX FUR!"

Michelle took time during her travels in England to spread the word about bears killed for the King’s Guard’s caps and plastered anti-bullfighting leaflets across Spain. Plan ahead with PETA Literature.

6. Smart Phone User

Ryan’s outgoing voicemail message says, “Hi. I can’t come to the phone, but while we wait for the beep, here are some facts about the egg industry.” Talk about unlimited data!

7. Super Sleuth

Len took photos at the airport confirming PETA’s suspicions that monkeys were being imported from Cambodia to Montréal, likely to Charles River Laboratories. He also picked prime locations for PETA’s ads slamming Canadian officials for enabling this gruesome, corrupt trade. A Canadian PETA donor sponsored the ads. Be part of it by joining PETA’s Action Team. And read these simple steps for placing an animal rights billboard.

8. Influence the Influencers

A TikTok influencer promoted lip balm containing beeswax and lanolin. Emily commented about the cruelty of the ingredients, and the influencer began promoting vegan balm to 5.3 million followers.

9. Birthday Smarties

For her birthday, Autumn asked family and friends to watch the eye-opening documentary Earthlings. Rob asked people to eat vegan for a week in celebration of his birthday.

10. One Minute Can Save Many Little Lives

Heather rescued a bird tangled in packaging, and now she always cuts apart strings, bag handles, six-pack rings, and anything else that could endanger wildlife. James realized that tape and envelope adhesive can ensnare insects and other small animals, so he folds sticky items over on themselves before disposing of them.

11. Radio Waves

When Jen hears morning radio hosts discussing animal issues, she calls in. On Groundhog Day, she was on-air for five minutes educating listeners about Punxsutawney’s exploitation of Phil. The hosts commented, “Thanks for setting us straight and we’ll never support this again!” You can find information on any topic at PETA’s website.

12. A Blessing for Animals

Sarah uses a beautiful PETA background during her church’s virtual service. (This works on Zoom or any other virtual meeting platform!) Check out PETA LAMBS for faith-based inspiration.
