PETA to U.S. Meat Companies: The Future Is Vegan

Published by Rebecca Maness.

PETA is contacting major U.S. meat companies following the news that one of Italy’s oldest meat producers, Gruppo Tonazzo, will stop selling animal flesh in favor of focusing on its line of meat-free products. We’re asking five of the oldest U.S. meat companies to follow suit by dropping animal flesh and focusing on their vegan lines instead—a revolutionary move that would put them years ahead of the competition.

PETA warns that meat companies that refuse to change will be left behind, just like tobacco farmers of the past who fought to stay in business instead of envisioning what was ahead and switching crops. The five U.S. meat companies that PETA wrote to already have their own vegan lines or partnerships with vegan brands, so it would be simple to focus on them. They include Hormel Foods (The Better Meat Co.), Cargill (Crave House), Smithfield Foods (Pure Farmland), Tyson Foods (Raised & Rooted), and Oscar Mayer (NotCo).

Gruppo Tonazzo—a brand that has been in business since 1888—made the decision to go meat-free because it feels that it has a “deep responsibility to future generations.” This move makes sense, because ditching meat is the best thing anyone can do for animals, the planet, and their own health.

Consumers are increasingly outraged by the cruel treatment of animals in the meat industry. Other animals, just like humans, experience pain, joy, and fear. They deserve to live in peace—protected from harm and from being tormented and killed for food. Consumers and companies are recognizing that we can nourish ourselves without slaughtering animals.

Additionally, the demand for vegan foods is skyrocketing—the value of the U.S. vegan market soared from $3.9 billion in 2017 to $8.1 billion in 2023. Right now, companies have a unique opportunity to be visionary leaders that reshape the food landscape by responding to this urgent call for change.
