The Top 100 Pizzerias in the World Have Just Been Named—Which U.S. Spots Serve Vegan Options?

Published by Rebecca Maness.

Each year, the Italy-based 50 Top Pizza Awards releases a list of the 100 best pizzerias in the world. We sifted through this year’s list to find out which of the pizzerias in the U.S. offer vegan options, and we were excited to see that most of them made the cut! Since many of them serve Neapolitan-style pizza, you can find a classic marinara that’s naturally vegan at most spots. But others go above and beyond with veggie-packed selections, and a few even offer vegan cheese.

When you choose a pizza made with vegan ingredients, you help spare the lives of animals. Every animal is someone, not something for us to exploit and use—just like humans, they all have distinct personalities, wants and needs, and a desire to be free, living without pain or fear. Making the simple (and delicious) choice to order a vegan pie from one of these top pizzerias can mean a world of difference for cows, pigs, or chickens.

Here are the vegan options at the top pizzerias in the U.S.

#1: Una Pizza Napoletana (New York City)

The Lower East Side’s Una Pizza Napoletana took the top spot on this year’s list, even above pizzerias in Naples and Rome. The vegan option here is a marinara pizza—it’s simple, but it’s made with high-quality ingredients and an expert technique, so it’s packed full of flavor. For a little spice, you can add Calabrian long hot peppers. And after your meal, you can cool off with some fresh fruit sorbetto.

#6: Tony’s Pizza Napoletana (San Francisco, California)

Tony’s Pizza Napoletana is an iconic spot in the heart of San Francisco’s North Beach neighborhood. Here, you can replace the cow’s milk cheese with Selfish Cow vegan mozzarella on any pie. And Tony’s has every type of pizza you could dream of, from the classic to the coal-fired, which is made in a 1,000-degree oven. It also offers two vegan as-is pies with animal-free pepperoni and taco meat.

#13: Pizzeria Beddia (Philadelphia)

The Tomato Pie—which is essentially an olive oil focaccia topped with flavorful marinara sauce and herbs—is one of Pizzeria Beddia’s iconic dishes, and it also happens to be naturally vegan. Owner Joe Beddia even shared his recipe with The New York Times, so you can recreate this deliciousness at home! You’ll also want to try the creamy Judion Beans (served with olive oil, lemon zest, and Maldon salt) and the cheeseless Vegan Pizza, which comes with tomato sauce, oregano, and olive oil. (You can add up to two toppings, including greens, mushrooms, roasted onions, and pickled chilis.)

#19: Ribalta (New York City)

You’ll find a vegan pie on the menu at Ribalta, topped with artichokes, broccoli rabe, eggplant, peppers, mushrooms, zucchini, and olives. There’s also a classic marinara if you’d like to keep things simple.

#28: Jay’s Artisan Pizza (Buffalo, New York)

Jay’s offers a vegan as-is Neapolitan-style marinara pizza with tomato sauce, garlic, oregano, and fresh basil. It also offers vegan mozzarella cheese—choose it in place of cow’s milk cheese on any of the vegetarian pies. Tip: Sometimes Jay’s offers specials that are vegan as is!

#30: Don Antonio (New York City)

The Vegana pizza is vegan as is, with tomato sauce, zucchini, peppers, artichokes, assorted mushrooms, grape tomatoes, basil, and extra-virgin olive oil. You can also go for the simple Marinara pizza with tomato sauce, oregano, basil, fresh garlic, and olive oil.

#33: Pizzeria Sei (Los Angeles, California)

Pizzeria Sei is the first Tokyo-style pizza spot in Los Angeles. Tokyo style is a variation on Neapolitan-style wood-fired pizza with a delicate dough and a little extra saltiness. The spot’s vegan option is the Marinara pie with tomato, garlic, basil, oregano, extra virgin olive oil, and sea salt. You can add Calabrian chilies or get some olives and extra basil on the side. The Tricolore Salad (with arugula, endive, radicchio, and preserved lemon) can also be made vegan if you order it without cheese.

#45: La Leggenda Pizzeria (Miami, Florida)

Miami’s La Leggenda offers various vegan selections on its menu, including some appetizer and pasta choices. But we’re here for the pizza! The Marinara is vegan as is, and another option is ordering the Vegetariana pizza without cheese.

#50: Robert’s Pizza and Dough Co. (Chicago, Illinois)

Coming in at #50 is Robert’s in Chicago, which shines with a vegan pizza that’s topped with roasted cherry tomatoes, red peppers, Calabrian peppers, wild mushrooms, caramelized onions, sautéed spinach, garlic, and olive oil. This isn’t Chicago-style deep-dish pizza—it’s a New York–style thin-crust pizza that’s perfectly chewy and crispy.

#55: ‘O Munaciello (Miami, Florida)

This authentic Italian spot has a vegan marinara pizza and a vegetarian pizza that can be made vegan by ordering it without cheese.

#74: Partenope Ristorante (Dallas, Texas)

Partenope Ristorante offers a marinara pizza and serves vegan cheese, which can be swapped on any of the vegetarian pizzas to easily make them vegan. The Margherita features flavorful tomato sauce and basil, while the Meta di Sorrento comes with zucchini, lemon-infused olive oil, and mint.

#80: L’industrie Pizzeria (New York City)

Try the Tomato Pie at L’industrie Pizzeria, topped with tomato sauce, olive oil, and basil. You can also add mushrooms or a veggie. Another option is the Vegetarian Pie ordered without cheese—it comes with tomato sauce, mushrooms, caramelized onions, and fresh bell pepper.

#98: Slice & Pie (Washington, D.C.)

Build Your Own Pie is your best bet at Slice & Pie, a New York– and Detroit-style pizza joint in Washington, D.C. Start with tomato sauce, and then add your favorite veggie toppings: basil, garlic, jalapeños, mushrooms, olives, onions, pineapple, roasted bell peppers, or roasted tomatoes. It may seem unconventional, but we highly recommend trying one with jalapeños, olives, and pineapple.
