Not only is using butter cruel to cows, it’s also unhealthy, because it’s full of saturated fat and cholesterol.
We’ve sung the praises of egg replacers before, and replacing butter is just as easy. All you have to do is be a little more creative with your cooking methods—that’s where our video comes in handy.
Check out these five ingenious ways to enjoy your favorite foods without butter:
Applesauce
Use applesauce instead of butter to create fluffy, sumptuous cupcakes.
Pumpkin Purée
Pumpkin purée does double duty by adding flavor and a buttery texture to pumpkin bread.
Lime
Sautéing vegetables in lime juice will give your stir-fry a refreshing flavor, without the saturated fat and cholesterol of butter.
Avocado
Your breakfast toast will benefit from a spread of healthy avocado instead of butter.
Coconut Oil
You can mix coconut oil into your batter for moist, butter-free poppy seed bread.
If you eat butter, you support the horrific dairy and meat industries that slaughter more than 30 million cows per year in the U.S. alone.
On farms, calves are often torn away from their mothers within a day of birth, which causes them both extreme distress. Mother cows can be heard calling for their calves for days. Male calves are destined to end up in cramped veal crates or barren feedlots, where they’ll be fattened for beef, and females are sentenced to the same sad fate as their mothers. Artificial insemination, milking regimens, and drugs are used to force them to produce even more milk.
All this suffering—not to mention the damage that meat and dairy “products” are causing to your health and the environment—can be avoided by going vegan. There are also plenty of brands that offer vegan butter.
