See Penélope Cruz in Her Most Beautiful Role Yet
“I’m strong and opinionated,” says Penélope Cruz. “Those qualities brought me a lot of problems since I was a little girl in school, saying, ‘I don’t agree,’ and fighting with the children. It’s part of my curiosity for life.”
But strong, opinionated people who are prepared to stand up to others are exactly who animals need in their corner. So the fearless Cruz is partnering with PETA to oppose one of the things she doesn’t agree with: fur.
Together with one of her feline friends, the Oscar winner and perennial “best-dressed” list member is joining with PETA once again for a new ad that’ll strike a chord with anyone who cares about animals.
“Finally, so many designers are going fur-free, and I’m looking forward to the day when no animal is caged or trapped and killed for fur,” says Cruz, who first appeared in an anti-fur ad for PETA in 2012.
Since most of the world’s fur comes from China, where there are no laws governing the treatment of animals on fur farms and animal skins are often deliberately mislabeled, there’s a good chance that anyone who wears animal fur is wearing cats or dogs—just like the ones Cruz often rescues and takes home.
But no matter the species, no animal deserves to be snared in a steel trap, beaten, gassed, poisoned, electrocuted, or skinned alive to be turned into a pompom or trim on the hood of a coat.
That’s why a long list of top fashion designers and retailers have recently gone fur-free. Coach, Burberry, Gucci, Michael Kors, Jimmy Choo, Versace, Furla, BCBG, Jean Paul Gaultier, John Galliano, and Diane von Furstenberg all banned fur following years of PETA pressure. Dozens more—including INTERMIX and all of Gap Inc., H&M, Inditex (the owner of Zara), Banana Republic, Ralph Lauren, Calvin Klein, Tommy Hilfiger, Giorgio Armani, and Vivienne Westwood—have long recognized that fur belongs on its original owner.
It’s time for Canada Goose to do the same. Tell the company that there’s no excuse to keep killing coyotes to trim its coats.
