Exciting News! Romania Bans Chinchilla and Mink Fur Farms
Huge news! The Parliament of Romania in Bucharest voted to ban the breeding, keeping, and killing of chinchillas and minks for fur, effective January 1, 2027. Twenty-one other countries in the European Union have adopted similar bans.
With this ban, Romania is not only sending a strong signal for more compassion for animals but is also acting in the interests of its voters. The majority of Romanians and the European population rejects fur.
This decision will spare tens of thousands of animals every year an extremely painful existence. On fur farms, chinchillas and minks, among others, spend their entire lives in wire cages in the most unhygienic conditions, with feces, rotting food, and matted hair. Chinchillas—who love to spend their days burrowing, climbing, and playing—are forced to live in tiny cages with no room to do anything that is natural or important to them. And minks, who prefer to keep to themselves, are often confined by the thousands, where they have no personal space, leading to anguish and frustration that causes many animals to self-mutilate, biting at their skin, tail, and feet. They’re often killed by gassing or being anally electroshocked so their fur isn’t damaged.
We call on the EU to follow Romania’s example and finally close these places of horror. A continentwide ban on fur farms and a ban on the trade and importation of fur products are long overdue.
