Your Lobster-on-a-Stick Will Make You Sick
After conducting four inspections of Linda Bean’s lobster and crab slaughterhouse in Rockland, Maine, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) cited the company for serious food safety violations.
Violations cited by the FDA include condensation from steam generated by the cooking process dripping from the ceiling—and possibly contaminating raw meat—as a result of inadequate ventilation, rust and discoloration on the area of the ceiling where ice falls through a chute, and cleaning hoses touching the slaughterhouse floors.
The FDA inspection report noted that the lobster and crabmeat at the slaughterhouse were “prepared, packed, or held under insanitary conditions whereby they may have been rendered injurious to health.” The FDA warned that if the violations are not corrected, the government could shut down the slaughterhouse and seize its products.
The inspections were conducted after PETA filed a complaint with the FDA following our investigation at Bean’s slaughterhouse in September. Our investigator documented that workers were tearing live animals limb from limb, ripping their heads off, and dumping them into boiling water, among other abuses.
What You Can Do
The cruelty at Bean’s slaughterhouse is enough to make anyone sick—literally. You can help by urging Bean to stop tearing apart live animals and switch to a less cruel slaughter method.
